Excellent post EMP very near the mark.
This is how I see this mess:
Option 1
We have to overpay now for 3 WC players at least and the salaries to match and hope we can stem the rot.
Problem is there are very few who would even want to take the chance on joining. Agents do their homework with top players and a blind bat can see the mess we are in.
The sums involved will see FSG having to loan the club money and personal fortunes have not been touched up to now so very unlikely to happen. In fact it won't.
Option 2
We manage to sign 1 semi-marquee player and a mix mash of a rest of a team in the weakest areas. We are still short next season and it unravels with a small squad because we failed to replace the huge number that will be shown the door in the summer. Th newbies will start just as with this as they learn the managers system and the game of fellow pros. Spin goes on overdrive but the fans finally revolt with BR shown the door and no-one of the quality needed now available mid season.
Option 3
Klopp is recruited, the committee 'adjusted' and he is given a decent transfer budget with an emphasis still on rough gems. However he has more leeway on signings and because he knows the less expensive German league so well and because of his standing in the game, we manage to get a very decent number of shrewd buys that whilst not making us world beaters overnight put us on the road to climb the ladder in the coming seasons.
It will be tough, but having a WC manager who understands the mentality needed to win a championship and grace the upper echelons of European competition greatly improves our chances of succeeding.
Whatever happens there are no easy solutions to this shambles and FSG and LFC personnel, have ruined the club for the foreseeable future. This is a really really good post, fantastic! Unfortunately option 2 is exactly what is going to happen, and everything that's happened since the summer is exactly as I called it over summer. I don't know if Klopp would come to us, but FSG will almost definitely give Rodgers another year and by then Klopp will be somewhere else.

Sadly I'd also say option 2 is the most likely. To me it's not how bad this season was but more about what it means for the future. More of the same I think, and it will be until we reach a point when fsg decide to cash in on their investment. My one hope is that they will do so once the stadium expansion is done.

No need to panic and assume that drastic changes are required. Our main striker has played only a handful of games. THAT is the reason we've underwhelmed a little. If sturridge had been fit all season he'd have got at least 15 goals which would almost certainly have given us enough points for 3rd or even 2nd.

And why didn't Rodgers use any of the 3 forwards he signed, ie, Borini, Lambert and Balotelli? Are we a one player team after he spent more than 200m?

His not playing a striker has really p!ssed me off! They might not be the best around but at least they're strikers. Plus, if we'd gone 2 up with Borini and Lambert/Mario, I think that could have been a good combination. Maybe not good enough for top 4 this season still but we'll never know now.

For the last 20+ years we've had 'ifs' in our summation of every season. While Gerrard was being honoured yesterday the Anfield music director played The Stranglers 'No more Heroes'. Prophetic. We've run out of 'ifs'.

Additionally what does it say to those strikers about how much you rate them? They clocked out yonks ago when the manager preferred to put a young winger who isn't playing well up top ahead of them, even if they've come on and done a half decent job.

I have to concede that the continual inclusion if sterling as a striket is puzzling. He has virtually no composure in front if goal whatsoever.
I'm thinking this: sterling's demands aren't about money. He wants to be played as a striker and BR is trying to accommodate him in order to get him to sign a new contract.
I can see why BR plays sterling up front:
Balotelli has been garbage Lambert is Plan B...starting him would require us to change our play Borini hasn't made the grade and refuses to leave
Under the circumstances maybe Sterling IS our best option?
