Liverpool were interested in signing PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay, according to the Dutch club's sporting director Marcel Brands, despite manager Brendan Rodgers' insistence the Reds were never in for him.

Last week, it was confirmed Manchester United have agreed a reported fee of €30 million for Netherlands international Depay.

Liverpool had been linked with Depay only for Rodgers to say on Friday that he was never interested in signing the forward.

He said at a news conference: "Unfortunately for you guys, it wasn't one we were ever interested in. He's obviously a talented young player, but we already have four wingers at the club."

Liverpool didn't want Memphis Depay - Brendan Rodgers
However, Brands has claimed that he spoke with Reds chief executive Ian Ayre about the 21-year-old.

Brands said in the Daily Mail: "There was a lot of interest in him. Finally we spoke with three clubs and we made contact. They knew what we wanted and then it was up to the player to choose the club where he wanted to play.

"I didn't speak with Brendan Rodgers. I had contact with Ian Ayre. I know there were some problems with [Daniel] Sturridge, maybe that changed the decision.

"I don't know. I'm not in the club of Liverpool. I don't know what the policies are inside. But Man United were very fast and that changed the decision for Memphis. He made the final decision. He made his choice.

"We are happy with the transfer to Man United."

I'm just speculating, but we registered an interest, spoke through Ayre to the player, and the club decided to pursue our priority of a striker, not a winger. We're crying out for a finisher to make an impact now. Lacazette for £30m or Depay for £30m? That could be the decision they had to make...

Why not both,as he at least seems like a winger with an end product.

That job interview was going so well until I realized I was fukked up on acid in the middle of a cornfield naked and talking to a scarecrow.

On a personal level, to be honest, I'm not as impressed by his videos (not a true representation I know) as I am of other options. At £25-30m, he's more than we've paid for a young player so far, and if we're going to spend big, maybe we shouldn't take the calculated gamble on him.

That being said, why we don't get both probably comes down to priorities. We have a lot of wingers already, as BR said quite accurately, and Origi could fall into that category too. We need more goals from midfield, and a proven goalscorer, and at the moment, Depay isn't either at PL or comparable level.

I could accept it if we are 110% sure we'll get Lacazette, but with LFC there are never guarantees and we know how the story will go: "LFC in pole position to sign Lacazette" and the next day, Chelsea/City signs Lacazette.

We have wingers that contribute little in terms of assists and goals though.

To be fair to them, they've had no fukker to assist! No point making crosses to an empty box. Plus it seems Rodgers always sets them up to cut inside instead of going wide.

Manchester United are the new favourites to sign highly-rated Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette, according to Metro.

See what i mean. And if true they could agree a fee within weeks, while we still pondering over the idea.

The club said that they didn't want to sign anyone before their end of season review. There is also the possibility that after that review, they'll be booting Rodgers and bringing someone else in. Now I know this fella is pretty good but there's no point buying someone when you're going to (possibly) change your manager. The new man might not want said player.
