There seems to be an acceptance Manchester United are a bigger club than liverpool and always will be that's not something I can bring myself to countenance which I why I was gutted when DIC pulled out and we got gillet and hicks and John Henry who are pretty much as bad as each other just the latter is more sly and cunning about it. Unless something fundamental changes over the running of the club we can talk tactics managers and hopeful signing till we are blue in the face United will still be ahead of us. And let's not forget they are as capable of bringing youngsters though or buying bargains that become superstars just as much as we are.

'Managing expectations' ....mission accomplished, gotta hand it to them Stan,i never thought they'd get away with it.

That job interview was going so well until I realized I was fukked up on acid in the middle of a cornfield naked and talking to a scarecrow.

Otherwise, like you say, any new manager would want big money to reshape the squad. We aren't the type of club that can afford a high turnover of managers.

Playing on Sundays is a pain for the fans, unless it's a live game. the excuse for not doing well I the league will be on the basis that we haven't got the money to pay for a squad that get results if they have to play twice a week including European travel.

We are gauging FSG over 5 years or so and BR over 3 seasons. If we had built on last season, or only just dipped slightly, then it would not be so bad. But we've been awful in the league except for a short spell; humiliated in the CL; did nothing in the Europa League; haven't pulled of any big results in any other competition barring perhaps the home win against Man City.

We also no have a squad that is frighteningly poor in terms of star names/quality.

So it's difficult to see what progress we've made on the pitch over 3-5 years let alone 12 months.

That's kind of my point, but I mean it literally. We're in 5th now but last season we came 2nd (because we only had the league to worry about). The season before we finished 7th and the season before that we came 8th.....

....Last season aside, we are steadily progressing.

that's about the only basis on which that might conclude that any progress has been made but it's very flimsy. the problem with it is:

- it starts with a very low base. given where we were under Rafa & H&G most of the time I suggest our base expectation should be higher.
- the owners and managers have lead us to believe that our aim has been to be in the top 4. hence our progress should perhaps be measured against our target rather than against 2 seasons previously where we performed way below par
- it looks like progress on paper, but when you look at the playing squad it doesn't look like progress at all. the squad seems to suggest that 5th is the best it can achieve as opposed to it being a stepping stone to greater things
- being +- 3 points of Southampton, Spurs and with such a poor goal difference doesn't feel like progress at all

You seem to be forgetting that Utd are the richest club in the world and were league champions less than 2 years ago following a long period of domination and continuity. Utd might snatch 3rd place this season - we got 2nd last season but you seem to forget about that. Let's see how your Utd fare next year with the additional games before we start getting excited.

Comparing us with them is absolute nonsense, and that isn't the fault of the current owners or manager.

You are right, we shouldn't compare ourselves to them?
We should compare and contrast.

They appoint a manager that has won nothing, he wastes a fortune in the transfer market and they sack him, replacing him with a proven winner.
We appoint a manager that has won nothing, he wastes a fortune in the transfer marker and .... we stand by our man.

They develop a state of the art stadium that holds over 75,000.
We throw a back return up because our owners don't want to spend any more than they have to, before they sell us on.

They buy top quality players in the summer paying top wages.
We buy over priced potential stars hoping to get lucky and possibly drive out our better players over wages.

They go from 5th to 3rd in less than one season under their new manager.
Our manager, now in his 3rd season takes us from 2nd to 6th (currently).

We are told not to forget that we finished 2nd last season but not to complain now that we are only 6th (currently) this season.

If it was as simple as who has the most money then United would win the league every year.
No one seems to have told that to Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal.

We are 3rd in the league when it comes to money spent on transfers in the last 5 years so should we have finished 3rd in every one of those seasons?

Arsenal are 8th in the same table so something doesn't add up.

Great analysis there Shagmyster.

We are no where near a club like utd. Why would you compare us to utd? There [oops] all over us financially.

They are, unless you have your head in the sand and are still reminiscing about the glory days like a lot of Liverpool fans do. Since we last won the league they have been run professionally. Where we have been run like a circus.

You said it yourself, we finished 2nd last year. So what happened after we spent all of Surez money and more than 50% more? Are you saying it was just a fluke then?

Here's what happened:

We had to buy a lot of players to replace Suarez, and to give us additional depth because BR gave us our first CL football in 5 years (people forget that). With that many changes, it takes time to settle and integrate.

Last season we finished 2nd but not even the most foolish fans could have expected something similar this year. We didn't finish 2nd because we were THAT much better than everyone but City; we finished 2nd because of our light workload: no european football, and knocked out of both domestic cups very early on.

This season there have been a number of factors as to why we've been under par:

-we lost our best player
-our top striker has been a long term injury
-additional matches/travel due to Champions League/Europa league
-additional games due to reaching 2 semi-finals in domestic cups
-integrating 6 new signings in to the squad

You can call the above a list of 'excuses' if you like (I'm sure that's what rival fans do), but there can be no denying that the points made have undoubtedly been the reason for our league position and/or underwhelming performances.

Basically, we are the 5th richest club in Britain, so if you think we should be finishing higher than 5th I would love to know your reasoning.....

So you're extremely quick to point to last season to pretend everything is fantastic, but completely and utterly ignore it when it comes to looking at where we should be this season.

Great excuses/points, that do absolutely have an effect on our league position, but so does the absolutely ridiculous mistakes we make every year in the transfer market under Rodgers and the committee. In fact that is the absolute main reason we have massively underperformed, considering our position last year. You bang on about being the 5th richest club, and long term that should pull us back down to 5th. But we were second and spent the second highest amount in the league, something you've never been able to fathom a convincing reply to. If we spent even 2/3rds of that money in something other than a brainless way, we would have achieved top 4 quite comfortably.

So united supporters should be dancing around the place coz they're third, potentially ELEVEN points off the top? Wouldn't that point to THEIR expectations being managed?

Surely you don't support a team based on their perceived 'size'? Utd ARE a bigger club but I don't see why that should bother a fan(?).

As for DIC, they wouldn't be in charge now even if their deal did go through. Part of their proposal to buy the club included a 7yr exit strategy therefore, profit would have been their sole focus until we were passed off to the highest bidder. A great business model for the owners but not necessarily for the club. Whether it be DIC, FSG, H&G or A.N.Other, we would still be governed by financial fair play so I don't think things would be much different now anyway.

People criticise FSG for 'not knowing much about football' but that isn't part of their role. In order for us to be competitive, FSG's role is to bring in new sponsorship and partner agreements giving us the additional revenue we need for better players. The same goes for any club owner now that they can't chuck their own cash around and buy their way to the title.
