Who was your favorite Liverpool cult hero that you remember watching? I don't mean the really recognized world class players, per se, but the ones we loved that flew a bit under the radar.
I only started seriously following football at the beginning of the Rafa era, so I'd probably say Dirk Kuyt. Man was never blessed with much raw pace or technical ability, but he was clever with positioning, a work horse, and he always seemed to come through in the clutch. I'll never forget the way he galvanized us during Kenny's half season. Stevie and Carra were hurt, Torres was gone, and we needed a leader. The hat trick against United is one of my favorite games against them I ever watched (bar the 4-1 demolition), and he saved out butts in the league cup final. I think he was a major factor for Suarez adapting so quickly too (the dutch connection). Only ever missed one penalty too (like a 99.9% record or something).
There’s too many really, I absouletly loved Hunt, as I was young then and he was banging in the goals, but who could leave out the likes of Callaghan Liddle, Thompson, Dalglish, Barnes, Souness, Highway, Etc, Etc.
Here’s my Memory of the days when I got to games and saw the players and the fans and the atmosphere of it all.
OFT BEYOND THE CLOSE OF DAY
Oft beyond the close of day,
While slumber moods deny me,
Red legends steal the night away,
When they come storming by me;
My Anfield greats,
From Hunt and Yeats,
To Suarez and Gerrard;
Great hearts and skill,
Some playing still,
Some gone to their reward.
Thus beyond the close of day,
While slumber moods deny me,
Red legends steal my night away,
When they come storming by me!
I would the night delay the dawn,
Lest it might take from me.
This treasure trove I gaze upon,
All my fond memories;
The cheering throng,
The tuneful song,
The witty chants exchanging,
The surge and sway-
The old Kop way,
The football nouse wide ranging.
Thus beyond the close of day,
While slumber moods deny me,
Red legends charm my night away,
When they come storming by me.
