Torres can still be a good player he needs to have a team built around his quality's, Chelsea don't do that they just buy as many big names as possible and expect them to perform.

Actually, in hindsight, selling Torres so late in the window seems to have been a good move. It raised his price and seeing how his form has dipped since, it seems to have been a masterstroke which got us the maximum fee possible. If he stayed any longer, we would have got a lower fee and i think the same applies if we sold him any earlier.
The mismanagement was spunking the money on Carroll, but as Vish has said, at the time, under the circumstances, we would have had to overpay for any player and had we bought no one, i fear we would have had demonstrations outside Anfield. We don't know that though. There's plenty of rumours that suggest we could have got Carroll for much cheaper than we did. Plus, he wasn't the 'hot property' that people make out. He was a limited player doing reasonably well in his first big season. I am 100% certain that we could have got a much better player for much less money in the timeframe that we had. Let's not forget that we had 4 days to plan, not 4 hours - Torres handed in his transfer request on Jan 27th (possibly even the 26th?).

What I know from Comolli's interview (unless of course he is lying) is that KD wanted to play with 2 centre forwards, one more technical, the other more physical. I also remember rumours about Llorente who was approached but was unwilling to move to LFC. I think that FSG rubber stamped the Caroll deal because they looked at the potential sell on value, Caroll being English, young and on the rise, he had even been selected by Capello for England a few months before.

I agree with every word you've said in that post, I think the main reason we ended up with Carroll is because at the time we didn't have the right people in place to have scouted anyone else.

You do have a point. H&G did bring the club to it's knees when Rafa was sacked with his team and not enough resources were earmarked to the club which was close to administration. KD had been out of the game for too long to have a good scouting team if any particularly out of England, this is why Comolli was recruited
