I can't be mad when we played like $hite. We simply didn't deserve to win. Yes we were poor in other areas too but the main problem is keeping possession. We need to keep the ball a million times better than that if we are to challenge for the top 4. We just look so uncomfortable and out of ideas when teams press high up the pitch. Our players are too far apart when we try to play it from the back, so we become easily unstuck and end up playing it long or resorting to the counter-attack. This is very much the anti-christ of what Brendan is supposed to be building. I highlighted this problem previously as we rode our luck to the top of the league. Something needs to be done about it ASAP. I would get an extra body in midfield and play 3-5-2 personally. Its not the end of the world, but if we keep letting teams have the lion share of the possession we will get trounced 4-0 one of these days.

The problem is our best 11 is very good, but with Suarez, Coutinho and Johnson missing we've looked poor. More depth needed otherwise it's another 6-8 place finish.

Have to agree BM that this is the likely outcome. It's one thing to be trimming the squad of perceived over paid players if you then make sure that you add to those sold with a larger number (we were already wafer thin) of new additions on less money.
That hasn't happened and now we are as many have said paying the price. It is starting to look like a complete replica of last season where Suarez will step back in and mask the problems without us really being strong enough to kick on.

Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.

Our whole season rest on the shoulders of Coutinho and Suarez a 20 y/o and a nutcase who wanted to leave. Its depressing really

When Suarez, Sturridge and Coutinho were all in the team we looked boss, but I agree they were very much masking the problem. The problem being maintaining and retaining possession. Injuries contributed to the Southampton defeat, but even with Johnson and Coutinho in the side possession was a glaring problem in our previous games. Stoke, Villa and United all overrun our midfield and dominated possession one way or another. This is the main problem we need to rectify. Any other problem is secondary.
Lucas and Gerrard may give the team structure and leadership, but if its just them 2 we simply aren't good enough in terms of maintaining and retaining possession. BR must have realised this by now. If he isn't going to drop either of them for political reasons then least put an extra body in there, otherwise the midfield will just keep being overrun. It can't be a forward like Aspas or Suarez either, it has to be an actual midfielder who can contribute to maintaining and retaining possession.
This is why I'm really warming to the idea of a 3-5-2. I see it helping our possession game, but then again we won't be accustomed to it and could be found out in other areas. I digress. Whatever system or formation we use, its all about the possession. We have to improve that part of our game or we are in deep $hite.

Most people here said that we needed to sign a DM, at least to provide some cover, but it looks like bringing in Aspas and Alberto was more important for BR, too late now, bunch of useless twats.

So far I'd agree with that Vish, Aspas hasn't been a step up from Downing & Alberto isn't ready to play in the first team. It seems we've done the same in both the last two summers & buy players that won't be playing very much. Seems like a waste of money so far.

Exactly, there was no need to buy Allen last summer, our most expensive purchase was not even a priority.

I didn't start this thread for people to question whether it was right to sign player X or Y. This is football, not transfer-ball.
