We still have 2 major problems, finishing our chances (usually against teams well organised at the back) and we are exposed defensively (on the counter and set pieces). There is another thread saying that our problem is Agger now, common, that's nonsence.
Our problem is not the defender but our overall defensive system, BR is an attacking coach unlike Benitez, Mourinho but quite close to Wenger and Pep. It will always be; can we score at least one more that the opponent?
These problems have crippled us for years.
I can't see us signing a clinical finisher, as BR seems to prefer Attacking players who can play across the pitch. We need a Van Nistelrooy type goal hanger, either that or a Drogba, someone who is good in the air and bullys people.
We won't sign any Defensive Midfielders as BR has to fit boy wonder Allen in to his plans and Gerrard's place is firmly cemented in the ground no matter how he plays or whether he suits the system. BR prefers holding midfielders who pass the ball side to side. Any fast and skillful players will walk through our midfield as they are too slow to react. Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs will all have a field day.
We won't sign any steel at the back as BR prefers lightweight passing defenders. So players like Benteke and Altidore will destroy us.
So it's a no win situation.
BR obviously wants to be a team that scores 1 more than the opposition, as we saw last season that tactic only works against weaker teams, we struggled massively against top 10 sides, wasn't it only 1 win last season against them.
I think BR is firmly set in his ways, which is a shame for someone so young. I think he's seen the Barcelona model and tried to emulate it and mould his team around it, rather than working out a tactic which is best for the team.
