Spurs had some shocking league placings, even with decent players, but still kept that "biggish" tag.
We will be the same, errrrrr... more or less are now I guess.. we just get labled "sleeping giants" I wouldn't worry about it to much.
We just have to hope these new young signings we have fit the system, that the youth players (those that make the grade) play the same style as the first team and slot right in when given the chance. It sounds outlandish, but it's worked to a degree over the years for Barca, Arsenal & Dortmund..

Barca has regularly bought a few top class players like Eto, Ibraimovich, Villa, Fabregas, Sanchez, Neymar (even if all have not been total success) to complement their home grown talents (who are never interested to move on). Arsenal has only been able to qualify for champions league and they understood that if they want to win things, they need to change their cheap recruitment strategy. Dortmund have done well though, but, they are also spending to keep up now, not as much as Bayern, but, better than us and they just went to the CL finals. So how can we really progress relative to others? We need a miracle

We need a miracle 1) That's true, but that's the best way (IMO) to go about it - get a good strong base and then add those two or three big names and it'll make the base of your team even stronger. Secret is to get them playing as a team. 2) Arsenal need not change a thing about their recruitment policy, quite the opposite. They would have won plenty more titles and trophy's if they'd held on to the players they developed - they need to teach the richer teams to fuckk off, plain and simple. 3) Dortmund have done very well, now they can afford those 2 or 3 class players - something we can do later when we have a team... playing as a strong, solid team. 4) A champion team is better than a team of champions.. We can't match the very richest teams in money, but we certainly have enough in the pocket to develop a very good team of good, talented players playing in the same direction. Quite simply, we have to build a team, not buy one.

Quite simply, we have to build a team, not buy one. We need to do a bit of both (build a bit and buy a bit) else the most that can happen to us is to become Arsenal (and there are no guarantees), competing regularly for top 4, win nothing and lose our best players every year (Henry, Fabregas, Nasri, Van Persie, Toure to name a few). You cannot hold a player if he wants to leave, proven a number of times, watch out what happens to Suarez if not this season, it will be next. Do you remember Mc Manaman, Owen, Torres?

I think that the days when players viewed us a big club are well and truly gone. Rightly or wrongly, we're NOT seen as big club by the people that matter - current top players. They don't even remember when we last won the league - our achievements are nothing more than a history lesson to them and it's very hard to see where we go from here, what with FFP ruling out any sugar daddy type investments.
We find it very easy to sign players that no one else is after (aspas, mignolet, alberto, borini, allen, carroll, toure, sturridge, suarez, henderson, enrique etc etc etc). But as soon as a potential target has a choice of LFC or A.N.Other we lose out. That's what concerns me the most right now and I don't see how it will change. most of the players we're targeting weren't even born when we last won the league. It can only change if FSG sign 3 -4 proven quality players, if they do we have a fighting chance of top 4 in my view. If they don't then only a miracle can change it. This season is a defining one for LFC and for FSG, but I don't think they realize it...yet!
