I think they're going to have faith in Lucas for the first half of the season. If he can return to the form he had before his injuries, we'll be fine. If not, I think we'll get a new DM in January.

He's never been a very good DM. Sure he had a few good games, but when you compare him to Mascherano, Didi or even Sissoko (before the eye injury), he doesn't even fit into the same category.
Lucas is more of a box to box midfielder, and should be encouraged to roam free. He won the Bola de Ouro, being the youngest Brazilian to win it in 2006, and can you guess what position he was playing? Well I'll tell you, it was a far cry from Defensive midfielder, it was actually being an attacking midfielder. If you look at his goal scoring rate for the Brazilian under 20's team (the team he played for as an attacking mid), before he joined liverpool, then his goal scoring rate was ok, not to mention he had already played for brazil at 19!!
Rafa, while being very smart at times, also had a habit of taking a player and playing them out of their natural position. For some players, such as Stevie, it really worked, but Gerrard could of played anywhere during his peak. But for some players such as Kuyt, he played them out of position and didn't get the best out of them.
Lucas needs to be given his old roll as an attacking mid or box to box mid. We need him to get around. He's still fairly young, he has experience and has a fantastic motor on him. Play him in his original position!

I think we should move Dagger up to DM - he has a lot more ability on the ball and would be perfect in front of the back 4...
I'll get my coat..

Don't think Lucas will ever be a good attacking midfielder, may be he was when he was younger, but, he hasn't developed technically enough, he struggles to put a good pass in a compact defence and has developed his defensive abilities better. However, we need a better DM or at least a cover for a better Lucas if he does get better.

i don't think lucas is good enough, his tackling is clumsy not quick enough, lightweight and he is not vocal. most of our successful teams had a dominant DM.ie; souness, McMahon, mascarano, lee. if we want to challenge for c/l I would like to see someone like essien to come in.

Victor Wanyama is worth ten Lucas Leivas and even if we were prepared to pay £10m for him, it would improve the squad massively. Hope someone at LFC might realise this.

He was our best player 2 years ago. He was great until he got hurt. That said, I would like a more physical option.

Lucas is a very good player, but he's not a proper DM. Think Makelele, Viera, Keane. These days there are players like Javi Martinez, Daniel de Rossi, Sergio Busquets and Sven Bender. These are players that help there team tick.
That's why we should be looking at Wanyama, Neustadter, Clasie, Capaue, Gonalons etc. these are the types of DM that we are desperate for. I believe we can get into the top 4 with a good DM.
As long as we're using Lucas, Gerrard or Allen in that specialized role, were going to continue to be opened up easily.

I agree with the comments but what a misjudgement Allen was for £12m.
How much better use could that money have been put. That said there iss chance for Allen this season but I have my doubts.
