Had their been deaths would that have been the fault of fans or the authorities for not organising things. The answer is probably a bit of both. We all have a responsibility and standing up or throwing a coin is the road to worse things.

Don't think i can agree Stanley, drunken fans forcing their way through in athens...causing possible deaths , or throwing a coin are both far cry's from standing up in an all seat stadium, much as I dislike that practice, as much for my aging legs as for the lack of courtesy to those behind.
However if standing was the cause of all you seem to ascribe to it none of us would've survived long enough to see an all seater stadium. I have stood in a stadium in Dublin many times over the years with well in excess of 90,000 fans some with toddlers in arms, there wasn't even crush barriers and with very few stewards and in all those years there was never a problem, no Stanley standing in Stadiums has not led to any of the problems mentioned in this thread, and should not be equated or associated with Hillsborough, coin throwing, or the actions of drunken fans.

+1 Annefield great post.

i agree athens and standing on the kop or wembley are not comparable. but i would like to bet an oaf who stands is also probable for the other stuff including athens. just my experience of it an oaf is likely to always be an oaf. the stadium rules are there for a reason and very important they are not subject to personal interpretation especially by some tanked up oaf. who annefield it seems you have encountered also

I also think when groups of males all congregate closely together in a standing up enclosure, the mindset is definately different then when you sit down.I like you stanley lived through the 70s and 80s when football trouble was the norm, you know as well as I do nine out of 10 cases the crowd trouble always happend on the terraces and hardly ever in the stands, this is what I mean by a different mindset...

i agree joe and i have seen it many times people do things in groups they would never do alone. its almost primevial another reason why standing in seats should be stamped on bt lfc with a few losing their season tickets.

Yes unfortunately I have Stanley, more than once, e.g. not long ago I watched a game in Chelsea and was able to sit the entire time, not a standing fan in sight, but soon after I was in Anfield and had to stand the entire time, and not for the first time since seating was introduced, so yes our fans are probably as bad as any for this silly and rebellious practice. I don't condone it, but I would hesitate to ascribe the dire consequences suggested in this thread to it, that's all.
But I do take your point that those who persist in this practice seem careless towards the comfort and enjoyment of other fans, who pay for their seats (not to mention the travel costs in many cases!) and should be allowed to enjoy them.

that recent Cup Final against Chelsea done it for me stanley, paid nearly 100 quid for a ticket and the only time I sat down was during half time, how can this be right...

correct and this is now the attitude of the modern supporter and thats why it wrong and , someone said its not the same as throwing coins or racial abuse well it is , its the bad old days creeping in and now the talk is off standing areas because it works in germany , well yes it does but there attitude to match going days are very different to the match going day of an english supporter who has been home and away for 25 or 30 years and there are some of us who are still here even though people have no grasp of football before the year 2000 , do we really want to go back to chanting "hello there man" and having a p1ss into a rolled up echo ????????

this is what I am saying stanley about a whole different mentality when fans stand up than sitting down, fans are more rowdier when they are standing for some reason maybe its something to do with the tribal instincs seem to come out more when large groups of males are huddled together in big numbers, they get brave and when you throw in a few bevvies, well the situations goes even worse...
