There is an in-between. Recycling the ball is okay, but when there is 2 minutes left and reina and skrtel are passing the ball between each other? Is that clever possession? No it's not.
Rightly or wrongly Rodgers is trying to instil a 'philosophy' of playing back and sideways a lot. Now I think these players are sometimes doing this a bit too much, whilst trying to learn the system they haven't got it quite right and play it back and sideways too much. Hopefully, when to pass will come.
The problem in my opinion is compounded by an unbalanced midfield. Whether it be because Gerrard and Allen are being asked to do too many jobs while Lucas is out, or because they don't have the required nouse or ability is yet to be seen. We have pinned all our hopes on Lucas providing that balance, I worry we ask too much.
We desperately need a CAM that can turn possesion from the back to the front. Gerrard isn't doing it, neither is Sahin or Suso. For me, as much as we need wingers and strikers, we desperately need someone in a forward attacking mid role to link everything together.
