shockingly, i'm with General on this one, Barry would be a fantastic signing, he'd make a massive difference in the games we've struggled with this season where the opposition has 10 men behind the ball.
no way will he be £18 million though, not in this financial market, he's desperate to leave, 28(?) and only has a year left on his contract.
if MON was prepared to sell for £18 mill last year, i expect somewhere between £10-12 million this year, the 18 quoted in the press is lazy journalists copy and pasting there writing from last summer.

as many of you said, if barry comes to us it will be for no where near £18, i would guess around 10-12 maybe... Barry is a good player but i have my doubts that he really is the player we need... i think he's quality but the priority should be a attacking midfielder, someone like david silva...

Zhirkov is an excellent addition. The boy's got massive lungs and will dominate the left wing and left wing bck position. He is really quick and has good feet. He chips in about 5-8 goals a seasons too.
For Barry is a touch and go signing...he will give Rafa massive options and make us less predictable in terms of our line up..but at the same time, i dont see how he is better than Alonso. In fact, i dare to say that even though they play in the same positions, they have different skill sets.
But for me, it is Silva or Gourcuff, who can give us the ammunition to unlock stubborn defences.

Barry would be good but not for 18 mil. And in answer to the people saying "why do we need him" - it's called depth. Utd have it and we need it if we are to stay at the top.

Hello fellow Koptalkers.
Virgin poster here - go easy on me, but.....
I'm a big yes for Barry. There's no way he'll be £18m, we wouldn't pay that last season, and now we're holding the cards (O'Neill mutterings that "he wouldn't begrudge him a move/champions league football" etc etc).
Barry offers the obvious cliches of more "depth" and "versatility". Rafa has been playing Stevie up top, with Xabi and Mascherano sitting. When either of them are injured or suspended we call upon Lucas, who has been largely inconsistent (to put it in a nice way). We even had to play Aurelio as an emergency centre mid against Pompey. Granted, he did a great job in a strange one-off formation, but even Rafa admitted he isn't a long-term prospect there.
We need more quality options. Look at United's centre mid options.... Carrick, Fletcher, Anderson, Scholes, Giggs, Hargreaves. They can shove O'Shea in there if needs be and that Gibson was man of the match there in the league cup.
For us though, Jay Spearing may progress given the chance, and Plessis hasn't seemed to have made the step up yet. But we NEED another centre mid. Would Barry have dived in clumsily and given the penalty away against Wigan away? Probably not. I'm not a Lucas hater by any stretch, he's played really well recently. It's just by way of comparison, I'd rather have Gareth Barry as another option.

Hey Carra, welcome. Good first post mate! We also played Dossena on the left as a stop gap. It baffles me when people throw the argument out that we need more depth to regularly challenge the Scum, but when it is said that we are going to sign Barry - a player that I think has alot of quality (thanks Rafa ) - these same people say we don't need him. The reason the Scum have been so successful over the last few years is not due to Slur Alex or Rooney or Ronaldo or Ferdinand. It's due to the fact the when they need to they can look to the bench and call on world class players. We need the option too.
