i've seem quotes in the press of him over the past month saying we need "a couple" or "a few" more players in january.

maybe the owners have knocked him down a peg or two since. at the weekend he said: "If you're not going to have a massive investment to make it happen quickly, you have to develop it. That's where we're at."

that suggests we may go for more potential in this transfer window. i really hope not unless its someone really promising.

i really don't think we need 3 players this window, i just think one will do us until the summer. if we spend as big as we can on one player we'll be a step closer to improving the squad / results.

we already have enough youth to provide depth in the squad. it's just the first 11 that needs a bit of a boost.

with suarez scoring and borini probably on his way back in january, i'd look to spend it on walcott who can occupy the right wing.

To be honest, I think we need at least 2 players - and that's without being greedy. One would be a great help, but I don't think it's gonna cut it, especially if there are any departures (eg: Downing, Cole, AC on a perma-deal).

When you say "potential" I think Walcott would fall under that category. He's still in his early 20s remember, so would tick both boxes of being able to go straight into the starting 11 and also meeting the infamous 'FSG criteria'.

Strikers the likes of Huntelaar and Torres who have been mentioned a lot, would be good enough to go straight into the team, but being in their late 20s, don't fall into the FSG way of thinking, so it'll be fairly telling to see who we go in for/sign.

Walcott wouldn't cut it for me, he isn't a goal machine that this club is craving, we need a Hunterlaar, I know it seems impossible to some but its doable, his contracts is going out in the summer so a 6-7m price should do it. I also agree with you bar that we need 2 strikers, 1 might be not enough but will FSG sanction even one transfer nevermind two? We will have to just wait and see I guess but there is no doubt in any fan's mind that we need reinforcements and we need them big time.

Apparently they were willing to sanction a £15m move for Sturridge at the end of the last window, so I'd be astounded if they weren't going to offer at least that amount of funds now.

Huntelaar's agent has come out and denied that a move had already been agreed with a PL club and said that he'll decide on his future in January. Apparently there are clubs in Spain Italy and England after him, with ourselves and Arsenal the reported English clubs interested. Arsenal replaced RvP with 2 strikers (Giroud and Podolski). I'd be surprised if they were in for him. They also already have Gervinho and Chamakh.

He said that towards the end of August as well but nothing materialised.

I can't see Huntelaar being allowed to leave in January. Schalke are flying high - if they keep their best players (ie huntelaar) until the end of the season they have a very good chance of qualifying for the CL and a £30m+ income. Why would they jeopardise that for a £6m or £7m transfer fee? And why would KJH swap challenging for titles and playing in the CL for mid-table shenanigans on merseyside? It makes no sense at all.

Bayern will have the league sewn up by January. Schalke might decide to reinvest the 6 mil into a new young striker and feel they could still get the CL. Huntelaar might also fancy rejoining Suarez who he had a ridiculously productive partnership with in Holland. I don't see it as a guarantee or anything but definitely don't believe it can't be done

On face value, it doesn't make any. A certain LS did exactly that though.

The opportunity to play with Joe Cole is certainly in our favour for signing him

I actually forgot that Suarez and Huntelaar played together for Ajax. Not sure what sort of partnership they had, but if it was a good/productive one, it could work as a pull for Huntelaar. Honestly, I'd be surprised if we got Huntelaar - for the reasons mentioned in the last few posts, and also because of his age. I'd be shocked, but I wouldn't be astounded exactly. Like you, I think it's do-able. It'd just be a big coup if it was done.
