!i didn't see a northern ireland team in the olympics though smithlee 2011. Yet we see a British football team. Which I am personally against ( mainly on the grounds of why fix something that works?... for a good number of years we have had england, wales, scotland and northern ireland for htat matter reaching the world cup finals stages).
I would say looking at my passport (I am English) that northern ireland shouldnt even have a football team! My passport says United kingdom of Great Britainn AND northern ireland. Which leads me to think that northen ireland is considered a principality in legal terms (I'm not going into my opinion on northern ireland vs Republic or ireland - I don't really have one)
Whilst I am trying to avoid a question of which I admit I know little about ( is northern ireland the same as Britain, or is northern ireland the same as scotland and wales, to put it differently) I think that there are numerous circumstances for many nations which need to be taken into account and its far too simplistic to have say, every player 'forced' to play for the country in which he was born.
Another thing I dont understand is how it works for the rugby team a team involving people from north and south. This leads me to think that the only reason it isnt implement in the football is because of the fans being too violent rather than an ideological or political reason or sporting reason. When you see the violence there on the telly its like northern ireland hasnt progressed since the 70s
