I wonder when this picture was taken?

It's all so confusing. I just want it over with, I'd be chuffed if they just got Rafa tomorrow. I really would.

How do you know that?

Young and enthusiastic, has a footballing philosophy, lived in the country for a long time, works with what he has at his disposal, seems tactically sound even with the level of players at his hand. Gets on well with players and retains the best ones. Has made massive profits on player sales. Good youth development, doesn't moan or complain about senior figures above him, gets on with his job, the ultimate yes man. Signs players as cheap as possible, from under the radar as much as possible that also possess good technical ability. Well respected in the league. The "cheaper" more "common sense" appointment for FSG.

I think this is an accurate summary of the man, but I'm not so sure whether he fits the FSG bill. "Cheaper" is relative, as is "massive profits on sales". These things imply the club is interested in making money out of the players, which is the last thing that Liverpool FC wants, and should also be the last thing that a businessman wants. One maximizes profits not by selling one's assets, but by exploiting them. Buying exclusively cheap assets has significant drawbacks (ask Benitez), so it will be much more important that the new manager be active in spotting and buying youth to develop the spine of a team that will dominate for years, rather than picking up bargains and selling them for profit.

Now, I hear what you're saying, but LFC is not a selling club and hopefully never will be, but Martinez only has experience at a selling club where it's only necessary to win 30% of your games. Perhaps he could do better if he could hang onto his players, but the bar is set very much higher at LFC and I don't think he will take to the task like a duck to water.

It's a high risk, high reward appointment. Does FSG really feel that is what is necessary at this time? If they think Martinez is the next Wenger, then I can see absolutely no reason why they wouldn't appoint him. But Wenger is stubborn to a fault, utterly convinced his way is right, which is something that top managers need in their locker (with a DoF to help keep them from embarrassing themselves, as Dein was to Wenger), and I'm not sure that Martinez has that (yet). "Yes men" tend not to have the goods when they come under scrutiny, and I doubt there is a football job more under scrutiny than that of LFC manager. So if they're looking for a yes man, they're looking for trouble.

Good post, craney. I don't think FSG will be as dismissive of AVB as you suggest. Also, I've never been of the impression that he tried his best to destroy Chelsea, and I don't know anybody who is of that opinion. I think it's clear that he got a very tough time of some of the senior players, some of which was appalling.

I heard a story that he had started fining players money if they were even 1 minute late, and that he had a balcony on the training ground that he could sit in while the players arrived, and that there were certain players who used to actually park down the road and wait for the exact time to approach and then drive in just on time, get out of their car and run in and wave up at AVB. The height of disrespect.

I think he tried his best with a difficult group at Chelsea, but he clearly didn't handle it fantastically, and even though they may be a bunch of c*nts there, that is a genuine concern for me, as far as AVB goes.

To be honest, I've warmed more to the idea of Martinez since the initial announcement that we were going to speak to him. He's still nowhere near my favourite for the job, but I think if we can get Txiki Begiristain, then the 2 of them would make a great pairing.

I love Rafa, and he'd be my favourite for the job, but I just don't know how willing he'd be to work with a Director of Football. He seems a bit too controlling for that.

You know what who we fans think would be good might not turn out that way and who we think might be bad might well surprise us. You really can't tell in football how many Arsenal fans celebrated Wenger coming? And I am old enough to remember Man U fans when first Ferguson came. I distinctly remember them saying yeah Aberdeen but is h big enough for Utd? and the Manchester Evening news saying it.

You never know if its Martinez in three years he could be added to our list of Legends.

Very true, Stanley. Either way, the new manager - whether it be Martinez or someone else - will get my full backing.

And they will get mine. Very excited about the new season now whereas before I was close to packing it in.

I take it you'll be renewing your season ticket after all? laugh

I'm looking forward to stuff moving along. They need to do these interviews FAST and come to a decision FAST. If they were to interview one candidate a day, that's 2 weeks that will have passed. We'll be lucky to have a new manager in place before the Euros start. We need a new DoF in before then too. I would like to see a signing or 2 brought in before the Euros, but time is very much against us. Exciting times though!
