Martinez has had 3 seasons at a club who really lets face it have no right to be in there. Bigger fish have been relegated over the last 3 years and yet Wigan are still in there. Newcastle, West Ham , Birmingham, Bolton, Portsmouth all far bigger clubs have gone down to the Championship the last few years so what is it this guy is doing with limited resources, low attendances and supposedly inferior players?
Before anybody says he is not good enough for Liverpool remember he took 4 points off us with these lesser players. At the same time another favourite for the job AVB lost twice at home to us with Dalglish in charge with his "better" players.
I like Brendan Rogers but there is an air of "lets not get beat" about him. So very similar to the last two managers who have treated draws as a point won and not two lost regardless of whether it is v Man U or Wolves.
This guy has a good footballing brain and if we don't take the chance someone else will and the team that does whether it be Villa or West Brom will improve past us. Not sure what his contract situation is but he may actually be at the end of his deal with Wigan.
He has made some astute signings. Victor Moses, the two lads from Hamilton McArthur and McCarthy and Al Habsi who has been a fantastic signing for them in goal.
We were linked with all of those first three and signed none of them and these guys now play in the prem whilst we have spunked millions on Downing and Henderson.
He has played and managed in this country for the last 10 years and is one of those whose managerial qualities have taken him to far greater levels and achievements than that he had as a player. But because he is not a top name a lot of people do not see his capabilities. I think we should give the guy a chance. If he fails badly after two years then move on but if he is the real deal we can look forward to many years of success.
This is a guy hungry for a shot at the big time and if he is not ready for the eighth best Prem club now then he never will be.
As for a lot of the other names being thrown about I would use the term overqualified and ask them this. If you are so good and we are so big a club then why did you not throw your hat into the ring yesterday when this all kicked off? Most of the names being thrown around are either unproven in Prem or have doubts about themselves at a big English club.
There is one name I have not heard mentioned who has handled all the best young English talent around and could do a good job now he has learned his trade and that is Stuart Pearce. Totally out of his depth but has learned the hard way and was the only person who said he would do the poison challace job for England.
It won't be just a good man that takes the Liverpool job it will be a very brave one.
