I agree that there are many clubs who could pay more or could offer CL football to players that we would like to buy, but there actually aren't that many genuinely TOP clubs that they could go to:

1) for it to be an attractive proposition the club needs to be able to afford the transfer fee
2) the club needs to be able to afford the wages
3) the club needs to be offering regular CL football to justify a move
4) the club needs to have an existing base of quality players
5) the club would need to be playing in a good league
6) the club would need to have a vacancy for the player
7) the club would need to play to his style
8) is the club in a country or city that would appeal to the player?

Some examples:

-Madrid and barcelona could offer regular CL football to lavezzi/hulk/cavani but would they even get in their team?
-Apoel FC might be able to offer CL football but is it regular and could they afford them?
-PSG might be able to afford them but would they want to live in france and play in the french league?

If you filter out the CL teams that provide CL football but are in a poor league or couldn't afford the players or can't provide regular CL football, then the options massively diminish.
When it comes down to it there probably aren't that many clubs who fill all the above criteria at the time of a potential transfer. It's about 'ticking the boxes' and there aren't that many who do that most of the time. What this means is that we DO have a good chance of signing top players.

You be surprised how top players want only the best option to leave clubs

If you think that because Liverpool are interested that that's enough then think again

Yes they may still come but can Liverpool afford 150k plus contracts without the money from champions league coming in. That's the problem we face because if we pay massive money and fail to get champions league we could be another leeds utd

Agreed Carhee. I think we could easily attract far more players than a lot of fans seem to think.

However, it also remains to be seen (and I have grave doubts) whether FSG are going to invest like that. I don't believe it's a model they use outside Liverpool and their actual player expenditure out of their own pocket has been far lower than many people realise.

This the reason why we need that top manager in place as it is him who can also help attract the players to join him. Hence the reason why we had the likes of Alonso and Torres due to Benitez's reputation in Spain.

That needs sorting first before we do anything

Agreed. And we blew it on folks like carroll, henderson, adam, downing.

Damn. WTF was comolli doing?

It's true that there are top players playing for mid-table teams like Podolski at cologne, Martinez at Bilbao etc. They're every where. We just need to look and ask. That's how rafa managed to pinch alonso, torres, masch, pepe, agger, skrtel, etc for peanuts.

We didn't exactly get them for peanuts, but neither were they that well known at the time. Benitez simply knew a good player when he saw one and could develop potential into something substantial.

I wouldn't blame comolli for the signings. None of us know the setup we have in place regarding scouting but surely the manager gets the final say on who he wants? (The mechanics of the relationship are probably better discussed in a seperate thread though.)

They are peanuts considering how much some of them were sold and what they're worth today vis-a-vis their purchase price.

I don't know if you've bothered to look, and granted the red sox pull in some serious moolah, but they spend absolutely ridiculous money on some top class players for their baseball team. And wages are astronomical.

It's very hard to tell though because transfer fees haven't gone up steadily - we blew them through the roof with kenny's purchases and man city haven't helped either (but at least they are getting something in return I suppose)

Lfc are going to get left behind if a top manager is not signed who can attract quality players to the club cuzz of him.

The other thing that worries me is ... the other top teams in the epl are going to spend some serious money on quality players in the summer ... even Wenger,

That leaves lfc fcuked on the pitch n off it.

Rant over
