If we need 7 wins from our last 13 games we'd better start praying to every god we can think of. Our last 13 league games have returned a paltry 4 wins so forgive me for not being too optimistic, especially with extra cup games to tire our players out.
-Based on our form this season (1.56pts per game) we are going to finish on 59 points. -Based on our more recent form, say the last 13 games (1.23 points per game) then the more likely outcome is that we will scrape in on 55 points. -Last season, 55 points would have got us 7th -The season before that, 55 points would have got us 9th -The season before that, 55 pints would have got us 7th -When you throw into the mix the fact that we haven't won more than 2 games on the bounce all season, it really is absurb to think we'll get 4th. -If you still need convincing, we have more energy sapping games to play than newcastle, arsenal and chelsea so they will be fresher and fitter coming in to the final furlong
Due to our poor goals scored in the league, it looks like either arsenal or chelsea will only need another 12 points from 13 games to prevent us from getting 4th.
Call me pessimistic, miserable, gloomy or whatever what makes you feel better, but the above is REALITY.

Why not try and debate the points I made? Has the harsh reality of our season reduced you to cheap insults?

This all assumes that what happens in the past will dictate what happens in the future. Which is not true in football, the stock market, or anywhere else in life. I'm going to take the opposite route and be optimistic. Looking at the positives: Suarez is back, Carroll is (finally) finding form, we have the best defense in the league, we've been fortunate in not having many injury problems apart from Lucas, and a cup win or two could really generate some momentum going forward. I don't know if we'll get 4th, but I think both Arsenal and Chelsea are teetering on the brink of implosion. Chelsea looked awful in the cup this weekend and an early CL exit could spell the end for AVB and could really de-rail their season. The same could be said for Arsenal. Wenger won't lose his job, but you can bet that morale has taken a hit recently. It could go either way, but we've got a lot to be positive about as well.

I'm part of the blind optimism brigade and having seen how we can play, albeit on rare occasions, I think we can string a run of results together for the final push, Chelsea and Arsenal are there for the taking!

But as no one knows what will happen in the future, the only way we can make any kind of prediction is to go by recent form - whilst not an exact science, it does give the only reasonable idea of probability. For us to get 4th, the following must happen: -Chelsea must implode and go on a run of their worst form all season -Arsenal must also implode and go on a dire run of results -We must outpoint newcastle by the end of the season -We must turn the form book upside down, set it on fire and p!ss on it by stringing several wins together Be honest with yourself, that chain of events is very VERY unlikely.

If we 'can', why haven't we? (the best we have managed this season is a run of 2 consecutive league wins...)

I agree with you, 4th is very unlikely. I'm just saying that we shouldn't discount the possibility. We shouldn't just focus on the cups and forget about the league. As long as 4th is still a possibility, I'm of the opinion that that should be our focus - in the long run, we won't be able to attract better players by winning some tin pot Littlewoods Cup; we'll attract better players when we're in the Champions League. That has to be our priority. I'm also just trying to emphasize that those contingencies you mentioned aren't that far-fetched. Cracks are already beginning to show in both Arsenal and Chelsea. Newcastle is a different proposition because they're on such a high right now, but any time you have that many players over-achieving, the wheels are liable to fall off at any moment. Is it likely that the demise of Chelsea, Arsenal and Newcastle will coincide with our own improvement? No, but stranger things have happened, so I'm going to hold out hope until I know for sure that our chances of 4th are gone.
