Glad you said that, Faz, cos just right now, Anfield Index have just retweeted more stats comparing Stewart Downing to Albert Riera:
OK so some tweets coming up to compare RIera (08/09) with Downing (11/12) for @WeeRedDog #LFC
Cross Completion: AR 19%, SD 25% | Mins Per Completed Cross: AR 95, SD 47 | Mins per Chance Created: AR 58, SD 36 #LFC
Attacking Half Pass Completion: AR 67%, SD 72% | Touches per Minute: AR 0.77, SD 0.70 | Mins per completed dribble: AR 37, SD 127 #LFC
So that's 6 key metrics for wide players and Downing wins 4-2 including 3 most important ones. #LFC
And considering Riera was in the best #LFC side for 20 years they can only paint Downing in a good light. #LFC
*waits for faz to spout on about stats meaning nothing*

I dont think Downing is better than Albert Riera either. at least reira weighed in with a few goals and didnt cost 20 million Riera scored 5 goals for us in his 2 seasons with us. Downing is yet to score for us, but has hit the woodwork 4 times in 5 months. No, they're not goals, but it shows he's more than capable of scoring goals because he's come close so many times - so of which have been cracking efforts too - the solo run and 25-yarder that hit the crossbar against Sunderland on the opening day. The over-the-shoulder volley from the lobbed ball by Suarez that was saved by the keeper (can't remember which team) was another fantastic effort that stands out. No goals yet, but he clearly has the ability, and he's shown that.

at least reira weighed in with a few goals and didnt cost 20 million Did he? Riera scored 5 goals in 2 seasons playing for a team that scored bags of goals. Downing hasn't even completed half a season, playing for a team that has massive problems scoring, so you can't really judge yet. What we do know is that over the same period at Villa, an inferior side to the one Riera played in, Downing scored more than Riera. If anything, history tells us Downing is much better at scoring than Riera. He's also better at crossing and getting assists. So yes, it's pretty conclusive, Downing is better than Riera. Which is why Downing was player of the year for Villa, while Riera was moved on to a substandard league. when downin g get 5 goals or more than he is better than reira .

It's only about goals now then is it, lol. If he stays for two seasons, he'll score more than 5 goals. will he ?

Yes. What reason do you have to doubt it? He scored 8 last season, 3 before that, 2 before that and 10 before that. What reason do you have to think he won't score 5 goals in a two season period? Are you basing your entire opinion of an established player and international based on just 14 games in which Liverpool as a team haven't scored that much. If we're just going on that, then even Suarez doesn't look like that much of a goalscorer, nor does Kuyt (we know about Carroll). It's 14 or 15 games, he's been played out of position several times, and we as a team aren't scoring. Give it a chance. For me it's not just about goals, and he's better than Riera all round. But yes I still think he'll get those 5 goals, unless he's sold or gets a nasty injury. ok fine as i said when he does he is better than reira until then and i agree with u about suarez and kuyt , but i cant agree to anyone saying downing was good against QPR or has been good this season because he hasnt and wasnt ..

It's subjective how you judge him to be 'good' against QPR. I thought he had a fine game. Ok he's no gareth bale who can beat full backs easily but downing's up there in his game intelligence. His interchanging play with suarez, maxi, kuyt in the final third was good and it's part of his game. We shouldn't just judge him on taking on full backs and whipping in crosses. After all, didn't he play on the RW against QPR? It'll be unfair to expect him to beat the left back and whip in crosses on his weaker foot when I'm sure kenny told him to cut in and take shots with his left. Looking at the team on saturday, i'm sure the game plan wasn't to put in crosses. There's no one to cross to! Instead, inter-changing play and keeping the ball on the ground was the order of the day. That's the reason why maxi played! And why don't we moan about maxi's lack of crosses why he was playing left wing? I think everyone agrees that downing's a good player (ok not up there with gareth bale yet). The only baggage he has is the 20m price tag.

Downing was bought to supply artillery fire for a brute-force forward. Most of the time he doesn't start when the forward does, instead being forced to cross towards people who cannot hit a barn door from 5 yards if the ball is in the air. Are you surprised that he has no assists? Given that he is often played on the right where he must cut in, and is primarily someone who gets assists, is it surprising that he scores relatively few goals under his own steam?
As for Albert Riera, I've never seen a player with a worse "off-foot", his best goal was when he refused to pass to anyone, ran the entire width of the 18 yard box, got into trouble, but managed to find the perfect strike by pure luck. I'd take Downing every day of the week, thanks.
