I don't really rate Spearing to be honest. Look how low he has gone down the pecking order. I don't see him bossing the midfield for Liverpool anytime soon. Well, clearly he's not first choice. But neither is Bellamy or Skrtel, for example - I don't think that makes them sh*te. You don't rate him, that's fine. I happen to rate him a lot more. I see a lot of good in his game, that i'd imagine most people have been missing because they're the 'uglier' parts of the game, but just as essential and the fancy attention-grabbing parts. Of course not, Lucas plays what you call an ugly part of the game. What he does is not that pretty but it is very efficient, players like him have taken a big step from where they were before, to where they are now. I just feel if Spearing wants a future at Liverpool he should be taken those same steps. Yeah exactly, and look how long it's taken people to give Lucas some recognition for the work he does. Some people still don't see it and think he's crap. I don't think Spearing is quite as effective as Lucas in that role, but he's getting better, and he certainly showed that in the last 7-10 games of last season. He's impressed me a lot and really changed my mind on him. Whether he'll build on that or not remains to be seen.

Well I hope Spearing proves me wrong, because although he has not shown much effectiveness in matches, he works his socks off. That is what I like about the new breed of liverpool youngster from the academy, they are all work horses. E.g look how much Kelly pushes himself.

Then why wasn't he sold in the summer by Kenny?

tbf, rafarendum was a bit harsh on spearing, but in the main i have to agree. spearing really isn't a lfc player (i like to think he isn't anyway). he should be sold next summer as should players like skrtel, maxi, jones, aurelio and johnson... if someone is willing to pay a good fee for him.

As young as he is, I think he has some potential. I think if he keeps going at this rate he will be a fine player for us. But there is (sadly) only on Gerrard, and that will always be so.

Spearing tries and has good attitude. Aquilani and Meireles aren't going to be happy on the bench, but Spearing won't complain too much. I also think it would be best for him to move. He could have a decent career elsewhere.
BarLEnnon, I'm not sure why he wasn't sold. Perhaps it wasn't worth it. Wouldn't get much money, his wages aren't that high, and if Kenny figured Aquilani and Meireles might be off, then he'd need some back up. Particularly for Lucas' position. I don't think he kept him because he sees Spearing as a genuine first teamer. Okay, but answer me this - a few years ago did you think you'd ever see the day Lucas was a first-teamer? I think Spearing is (and was, even before Raul & Aqua were sold) the closest/best back up we have for Lucas and the role he plays in the team. Kenny values him, and from what I gather, he's always been rated with the other players over the years. As I say though, whether he ever makes it as a permanent fixture in the first 11 remains to be seen. Personally, I have no problem seeing his name on the starting lineup. He really changed my mind on him at the end of last season, and impressed me a lot. It would seem he has a lot more to do to impress a lot of other fans though.

I see Spearing as backup to Lucas in the holding midfield role. We're not plush with players effective in this role, and no matter what people say about Cole, Aquilani and Meireles, they weren't very good at this role, they were all more attacking players, lacking the ability to chase the ball down and tackle. Until we sign a player good enough to challenge Lucas or take his place in that role (eg: a world class player like Alonso), then it's vital that we keep Spearing as backup, because Lucas can't play every game. I don't know how people can't see this, it's so obvious.

Manure won plenty of trophies with O'Shae and Brown, two very average players. All good teams and successful teams have their work horses so there's no reason why we can't win things with Lucas in the team.
