I hate to sound negative but I think a lot of people seem to believe we are closer than we are. Maybe I'm wrong (hope to god I am) but with Chelsea, City, and Utd all tipped to spend big in the summer, as well as Spurs and arsenal who will spend some and start with a much better squad than ours, I think too many people seem to think top 4 will be easy. I think Spurs are one top striker short of winning many of those games that they draw against lower sides (much like us when we were 1 or 2 wingers short) and that will put them right up there again. I think a minimum of 3 very good players need to be bought for us to be in contention of a champions league place. And for a PL title? I think we are years away.

Fair points made there myblood but although all those teams have much better teams than us this season, they have struggled throughout even united who sit first in the league. Top4 will definately be a challenge next season but we can ease that challenge with a few good signings and you never know, the league is getting more and more competitive every season so if those top teams struggle again while we find our 08/09 form, you never know we could win it but ofcourse its hard to see. I would expect a top 3-4 finish for next season if we end up spending big.

As we know we all think we have to beat the top four teams, when in reality its the "lower" teams we are failing to deal with,i dont think for all there money other teams are that great to be honest, the most important thing for us i feel is to be cosistant and grind those wins out when we play shAt, just like against arsenal,( although we wernt shat just over run what with injuries and all) its almost as important as having great players, lots of money doesnt always mean trophies are a given right. wink

The thing is with saying we only need 3 players , or we need 6 players (personally I think we need 3 and anything becomes possible) is that, as the current lot are showing (and chelsea and city are conversely showing) is that the team spirit is probably more important than the players to a large degree. You look at each one of our players individually except perhaps suarez and reina and you think how would they get in a first team at manunited or chelsea... Look at our defence suddenly we seem to have 3 potential greats... With the current money obsessed tightening the belts owners (at all clubs) imagine how much money would need to be spent if these 3 had to be bought from a big club as they had already established themselves and were big name players. Of course potential is only any good if it materialises in the future but the point is you could spend 100 million to get 3 top class defenders and they still might turn out to be wrong uns thats why I think we only need 3 (big name) players and we will have no problem competing with blue manure, blue scum, and manure red scum and arsenal, we only need 3 but they better be like suarez or torres when he signed for us the rest we can make do with and patch up with a manager like dalglish it is possible.

While I agree with that to a large extent, Armitage, I feel that we're asking for trouble not having a full squad. LFC right now is a side mainly with players who are not good enough to wear the shirt or merely have the potential to be good enough to wear the shirt. We have a handful of guys who deserve the shirt - Gerrard, Carra, Reina, Suarez, Kuyt, Lucas, Kelly, Meireles. Adding 3-6 players to that is not going to bring home the title. Perhaps we will still be good against the top teams, but games on the road against the mid-table sides who feel they have something to prove when he have some injures/fatigue will see us dropping points when we think we shouldn't be (eg West Ham, WBA this season). Only once we've replaced all the deadwood with players of either potential or who deserve the shirt will we be in a position to challenge for silverware, and only once more of those with potential come good will be destined to win it. It's a long road, but at least we've started along it.
