While I agree with your desire to avoid sentimentality, Rafarendum, I have to think that you're painting Kenny's potential second career rather too black. (I'm merging replies from the other thread where you wax lyrical about doctors - it's late and I don't want to write it twice) I for one am on the side of the fence that says, "We needed Kenny to sort out our off-the-pitch problems more than we needed a manager to bring home the title". Now that this issue has been dealt with, the next phase is to rebuild the squad, replace the cracked facade rather than continuing to paper over it. For me, this is not a job that Mourinho excels at without funds, Porto aside. His ego won't allow him to take over the LFC job that Rafa inherited, for eg, so he certainly won't be steeping into Kenny's shoes. Frankly, I think that Kenny, Steve Clark, and Commolli are sufficient for this task, so a 2 year contract for Kenny should be a foregone conclusion. That Kenny has had some measure of success with this side (outwitting both Ancelotti and Whisky Nose within a matter of weeks) suggests that he might just be up for this tactically as well, though perhaps we read too little in Steve Clark's contribution here?
The truth is that right now we need a talisman more than a leader, but the time for a leader will come soon enough. I'd say let's give Kenny the chance to prove himself in this regard, especially since he will likely need to find Gerrard's replacement as captain along the way.
Winning is always important, as it will show whether our efforts at rebuilding are being successful, but as a club we are some way off the upper echelons of both this league and the CL so expecting miracles from any manager at this stage is futile. We need pride in the shirt, we need the grit to win the tough matches and the skill to win the high profile ones against our rivals. I think Kenny's charisma alone will get us most of the way there, but while the doubts remain about his ability to win tough matches on the road (especially in Europe) I don't think we should or even can say a choice for Kenny is a choice where winning is not important. In this stint at the helm he has continued his 50% win ratio, and that speaks louder than words.
