Gerrard was a fantastic central midfielder when he was younger but those days are sadly behind him, Champions league final in Istanbul found him out in that position and am afraid thats why Benitez no longer trusts him there and has since kept trying to find a place for him in the team which suits him, firstly it was right midfield where he won the player of the year award and now he seems to think he's a forward, definitely not a central midfielder though.

In central mid he gets caught attacking and can't get back enough. I also think he gets into more trouble inn the centre as he defends more. More defending = more chance of a rash tackle.

Yes I thought of slotting Gerrard back into midfield. But Villa will cost 40 million+ and Rafa has stated he is not a target. I think we will get Silva, who Rafa did enquire about early on this month. And then have Kuyt behind Torres? To link up the play.

Thoughts?

agreed ged, rafa has struck gold with the gerrard/torres partnership. there is no way he'll break it up.

I think it would be a huge mistake to put Gerrard back. It isn't gonna happen anyway. Thankfully. By the way I love the way the guy who can't spell Gerrard's or Alonso's name insults other people's intelligence. Duh. whistle

I agree... Gerrard playing off Torres is non-negotiable! Rafa prefers an attacking midfield playing off a stiker, which worked very successfully when he managed Valencia. When Alonso goes, the priority is to buy a replacement midfielder.
