Everytime a new thread is started, the conversation will always end up with someone saying something nasty about Rafa using too money/spent too much money in his reign....
Managers rely on scouts for info on players. Very rarely will they do the scouting themselves.
I agree some players were no good, but i am sure a lot of them looked promising at first and you can never tell if new players can adjust to new climates and new regimes etc.
In fact, the whole buying of new players is a gamble compared with homegrown. Things may not always turn out well and this is part and part of the business.
Don't forget the cheque does not belong to the manager. There is a team of people who decides the budget, allocate funds and authorize any transactions. People seem to think that managers can write cheques willy-nilly. Of course they can't!
If we want to compare 'bad' spending, then look at the old Leeds...who got the blame for 'over-spending'? It wasn't O'Leary and rightly so, because the Directors took the fall for it in the end as they are the ones who negotiated the deals and authorize ANY spending.

Yes Malc, but does that mean a manager doesn't bear a responsibility to seriously look at a guy a number of times himself?
As I have said previously, I will always be thankful to Raffa for his achievements as manager, but there is surely no disputing some of the buys he made and the amounts spent were shocking.

Am I the only one who thinks that Rafa had one of the better records at transfers? Most of his initial buys cemented LFC as one of the most feared clubs in europe.
Torres, Pepe, Alonso, Masch, Garcia... the list goes on.
For the 'flops', he managed to move them on at minimal loss or even at small profit.
Crouchie, Josemi, Bellemy, even robbie keane (which wasn't his buy to be honest)
Only the buys in the last season were the worst but weren't really his fault too as he had to wheel and deal with limited funds from dumb and dumber.
Aquilani - Rumoured to be forced to deal as rafa had to buy from clubs that actually owed LFC money. (Riise deal)
Johnson - I still have high hopes for that fella as I think he'll do really well down the right wing. After all, he's still England's 1st choice RB. We can always sell him on at minimal loss if we decide he's not good enough.
What else?
All in all, I would take rafa over hodgson anytime anyday.
Konchesky - 4m Poulsen - 4m
WTF.

The only people that say that though are the mentally redundant ones who read the red tops. Not worth bothering with them. His net spend over the five years was £80m,in the same period he earnt the club £160m in champions league appearances, plus the £39m a season you get for being in the premier league, plus profits on player sales,he could of easily generated his own transfer budgets.Thats all there is to it,good manager, cancer infested owners and that piece of sh1t cecil, are the ones who blew all the money on interest repayments.

The good thing about Rafa that the majority of crap players he got in, he would ship out sharpish if he knew it wasn't working out.
Examples
Joesmi Kronkamp Nunez Carson Keane Morientes Pellegrini Cisse

i don't think its any good having a revolving door policy in a squad. rafa is crap at picking players maybe 6 or so he got right and usually for big money. he wasted huge amounts on johnny foreigners which is why we have now no defenders ,no british heart to the team and are pretty crap. why spend 8m on skittles when he could have then picked from a mulitude of british centre halfs, that are now big premiership players, and for less than 8m. same with dossenna -warnock etc. reina, torres, alonso are the only 3 that have really cemented themselves into the club and of course we know what he did to alonso. But you have an agenda with Rafa not a well informed opinion, thats your problem.Skirtel was not his 1st choice again but Parry said Vidic would have been a waste of money, and that is what he was dealing with all the time, simao, alves, vidic, barry, villa, etc.. but no we were spending £30m a season on interest repayments.

Dossena was a good lad,but it just did not work out for him like any signing you make is always a gamble, lots of bad signings from plenty of clubs, but we were not allowed to keep any players, hence why we have no strength in depth look at UTD £18m for hargreaves who is always injured, yet they can forget about that because they have £18m carrick,£24m drogba with £30m schevchenko on the bench etc Rafa never had that luxury,he couldnt even keep £10m players in reserve.

Dossena was a good lad,but it just did not work out for him like any signing . record transfer for a defender he wasn't even a full back , yes benitez bought very good players but the bad massively outweighed the good and yes i have an agenda about benitez he left this club with the worst ever squad that could see the club relegated but hodgson gets the blame for buying 2 players when its the established players who are to be kind woeful, benitez is just as must to blame even more so than hodgson or even possibly dalglish if he cant stop the slide for the dire bunch of sh1te he left the club with RAFA'S LEGACY is what were all seeing now .

An established champions league team, and one that finished 7th in a bad season is not relegation fodder.hodgson has a habit of taking a good team and leading them to relegation, was blackburn Dalglishs fault? Why dont you talk about the £160m Rafa made for this club over 5 years by taking us to the latter stages of the champions league?Where did that money go?
