When we hear talk of the great Liverpool centre backs a name that rarely gets mentioned is Phil Thompson. It’s all Hansen, Lawreson, VVD etc. I was very young when he played so just wondering how good he really was? Given he was club captain I’m surprised he does not get more acclaim.

He was very good I would compare him to caragher a very committed stopper

I think Thompson's reputation has been hit abit in the 90's when he was assistant manager and had a few run in's with various squad members, but he was an excellent CB for us, we have had so many great CB's, I guess it is easy to realise how good some not mentioned so often actually were.

Larry Lloyd another one forgotten in history but he was centre back under shankly for years
