Southgate should of brought attacking players much earlier to kill the game and avoid penalties if they are that nervous about taking them. Congratulations to Italy they deserved the win, they were fantastic throughout the tournament.

Agree except the penalty part, nobody knows how a penalty shoot out will pan out, Platini, Baggio, Maradona and more recently Mbappe missed theirs

It was a carbon copy of the World Cup and Southgate's tactics backfire as soon as we come up against a good side. We did well to get by Germany but there was a lot of luck involved too. We would probably have gone out if Muller had buried his sitter. We beat a poor Ukraine side and got lucky again against a good Danish side. Once again we found ourselves in the weak half of the draw and avoided all the top ranked teams. Southgate was far too negative in the final- and tried to sit on a 1-0 lead from the third minute. Once Italy scored there was only one team going to win that final - and it was Croatia all over again. Yet again he was slow to react, made poor substitution choices, stuck with tired favourites, and added the calamitous penalty taker decision to his catalogue of errors. Pundits keep saying Southgate did well to get us to the final - but a proper manager would have won the thing. He's going to waste another generation of attacking talent. It will be no better in Qatar.

I don't think a majority thought England would get to the final, so Southgate did better than expected, but you cannot compare him to Mancini who won the league in Italy and England. A better manager could have brought it home.

Agreed about the Manager part, but getting to The Final having pretty much home advantage all the way through was bare minimum expectation. Even Mike Bassett couldn't have failed to get this bunch of players to The Final.

Controversial suggestion for next England Manager, if we are settling on English...
Frank Lampard - did really well with Chelsea, considering they didn't really spend when they got banned from Europe. He brought through a load of kids from their Academy, who are doing well. He really should have got more credit for Chelsea winning this season's Champions League. I'm surprised somebody like Everton didn't give him a chance.

It's way too early for Gerrard or Lampard. Let them cut their teeth at club management for a while. Rushing Southgate into international management without club experience could also be a factor in why he folds in big games.
