FSG’s seven-year itch and their lack of commitment to our bird

John Henry & Tom Werner

Despite their denials, Fenway Sports Group (FSG) are willing to sell the club. Only their current valuation is preventing this while they gamble on Champions League status and the next TV rights deals.

Amanda Staveley, who is currently closing in on a deal to purchase Newcastle United, has made fresh attempts to buy Liverpool from the club’s American owners but she has been rebuffed by them. Credible articles which have been published by The Telegraph and The Times (free registration required) recently have made specific claims relating to Staveley’s offers for LFC, yet for some reason these have gone under the radar of the local media. Why?

The second half of the 2017-18 season will determine what FSG do next. Our current Champions League campaign and the qualification outcome for next season’s tournament along with the next TV rights auction that is coming up, will decide all. We believe they are currently deliberating their options. They are trying to work out when the best time to cash in will be.

A recent editorial on this website titled ‘The start of the end of FSG’s ownership of Liverpool FC’ touched on the growing negativity towards the owners from more and more supporters who previously had faith in them. The so called FSG OUT movement, while admirable and led by people who only care about the club, is not going to force a billionaire out of Anfield with its current efforts but it does prove that the fan base is split. However, we feel that supporters will be unified again and possibly a lot sooner than you may think.

The ‘seven-year itch’ is a psychological term that suggests that happiness in a relationship declines after around year seven of a marriage. That’s where we are currently at with FSG. We’ve been in bed with them for seven years and boredom has crept in. This would explain Linda’s constant tweets about clean sheets.

We cant see there being another seven years unless something dramatically changes. We believe we’re heading for a divorce. The honeymoon ended a long time ago and the reality has set in for both supporters and the owners.

Disruption is not ideal. We would rather everyone, including the owners, were on the same page but for whatever their reasons, they won’t give 100% commitment to the relationship.

We believe FSG held on to Philippe Coutinho in the summer for their own benefit and not just for the club’s. If you think about it hard enough, you’ll soon work out why.
