RB Leipzig boss Ralf Rangnick says Liverpool target Timo Werner should look for a new club if he’s not prepared to extend his contract with the German outfit.
The 23-year-old striker is considered a ‘primary’ target by Liverpool’s recruitment team who have been looking at the possibility of bringing him to Anfield during the current transfer window. Capped 24 times by Germany, Werner is entering the final year of his contract with RB Leipzig and they naturally want to see that extended to prevent losing him for free in the future.
Rangnick, who is leaving his position at the end of the season to be replaced by 1899 Hoffenheim boss Julian Nagelsmann, has urged Werner to sort out his future for the good of the club and its supporters.
He said: “Our position is that if he does not renew the contract, he should change clubs.
“He would first have to agree with a club and this club would have to contact RB, which has not happened to my knowledge.
“Last year we certainly didn’t play football like we did in the season before.
“We have submitted an offer and we know that Timo would rather not extend – but that can still change.
“Maybe he doesn’t want to go to Bayern Munich. Maybe he wants to go to Thomas Tuchel in Paris or, I have no idea, maybe to Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool or Lucien Favre at Borussia Dortmund.”
Werner scored 16 goals in 30 Bundesliga appearances during the 2018-19 campaign and provided 7 assists.
KOPTALK sources insist that Liverpool’s interest in Werner is genuine and that attempts to sign him are ongoing.
