Liverpool secured a 1-0 advantage going into the League Cup semi-final 2nd leg thanks to a single strike by Jordon Ibe at Stoke City this evening.
Ibe’s goal in the 37th minute was enough for the Reds to walk away with the win.
It was a much needed response to the criticism that followed the 2-0 defeat to West Ham on Saturday. This was definitely a very different Liverpool side on display tonight.
But despite the important win, it wasn’t all smiles for Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp who lost Philippe Coutinho and Dejan Lovren before half-time with hamstring injuries. Kolo Toure also ended the game clutching the back of his right leg. Keep an eye on our Liverpool Injuries page tomorrow for updates on the trio.
Below is a selection of match reports from the mainstream media that will give you an idea of how things panned out if you were unable to watch the game.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Lucas (Sky Sports)
Joe Allen (BBC Sport, Daily Mail)
“The only thing we can criticise is our finishing again. We had a good structure, played football good, everything was good but we don’t make enough goals. The biggest problem for us is we have two and maybe three injured players again,” – Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool manager
“Kolo [Toure] played outstanding tonight and was really good for us, but we’ll see if he can play the next game,” – Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool manager
“It was clear that we had to change something from the West Ham game,. Especially in the first minute when we started really well. When we start well, we always play well and today was the case. We had bad luck with injuries early on but to keep a clean sheet and score an away goal, now we go to the second leg trying to get a win,” – Lucas Leiva, Liverpool midfielder
