Steven Gerrard poised to accept Liverpool role

Steven Gerrard is poised to accept a coaching role at Liverpool Football Club’s academy after announcing that his playing career was over.

The 36-year-old hung up his boots yesterday and is expected to take up a role with the club’s youngsters while maintaining his television commitments with BT Sport.

There is also talk of Gerrard having a part-time role with England once a new manager is appointed.

Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp is happy for the former skipper to come in and assist with the kids but at yesterday’s pre-match press conference he became exasperated at the questioning.

“If you want to help the legends, leave them alone,” said Klopp, who fears that so much attention on idols such as Gerrard can put them under unnecessary pressure.

The Liverpool legend is now working to secure his Uefa A licence with the assistance of Liverpool’s coaching staff having previously secured the Uefa B licence.

“Nothing is decided at the moment,” added Klopp. “Obviously no one can wait for the moment. Don’t make the period more difficult until something is to be announced.”
