Souness on Liverpool’s title chances

Graeme Souness

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness believes Jürgen Klopp’s team will have to improve and overcome Manchester City to win the Premier League title.

Despite sitting joint top with City, Pep Guardiola’s outfit have a +10 goal difference over the Reds who are yet to really turn it on so far this season. Someone is certainly due a battering in the league and with Cardiff City due to visit Anfield on Saturday, maybe Neil Warnock’s men will be on the receiving end.

Souness, a pundit for Sky Sports, believes Klopp still needs to strengthen his midfield after missing out on the signing of Nabil Fekir in the summer.

The Scotsman said: “Right now, they are a little bit behind Manchester City and it hurts me to say that.

“But who is to say? Football is a strange game as well all know, injuries can happen, loss of form, but right now, I see City as being the favourites.

He added: “I think [the midfield being the weakness] is how Jurgen sees it, too.

“He’s signed two midfield players this summer and he went for Fekir from Lyon, the third one, so that tells you he thinks that’s an area he needs to strengthen.

“They have got three real workaholics in there (Henderson, Milner, Wijnaldum) but I don’t think they have got anyone that is really cute and clever, like David Silva or a Kevin De Bruyne.

“That is a hard player to find.”

Manchester City are top and are playing well while Liverpool, although they aren’t firing on all cylinders, are level with them. If Liverpool can truly get going, it could prove for an interesting season. Tottenham are another side who aren’t playing great but are also grinding out some results.
