You may have read over the last few days suggestions that Liverpool ace Roberto Firmino has been shortlisted as a possible transfer target for Barcelona. The Catalan giants are preparing for life after Luis Suarez and have reportedly drawn up a list of possible candidates that is said to include the Brazilian forward.
With Suarez turning 33 in January, it goes without saying that Barcelona need to start looking for a replacement and Firmino is an obvious name to throw into the mix, but should we be concerned? No, we don’t think so, not yet anyway.
Fresh reports in Spain now claim that Firmino isn’t at the top of Barca’s wanted list. While the Nou Camp club is looking for a ‘Big Gun’, there are other names such as Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe and Tottenham’s Harry Kane who are said to be ahead of Firmino, which is great news for Liverpool fans. Even Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford is said to be preferred over Firmino. A bizarre claim maybe, but hopefully that’s the case.
There was some chatter a couple of season’s ago that Firmino, who is under contract until 2023, was unsettled at Anfield, but those suggestions cooled and nobody with any credibility has suggested he could be looking for a way out since then.
It’s worth pointing out that when Liverpool sold Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona, Reds’ transfer chief Michael Edwards negotiated a clause in that deal that stipulated Barca would have to pay an additional £100million premium on top of any agreed transfer fee for any other Liverpool player that the Nou Camp outfit wanted to sign between then and 2020. As such, we can’t see Barcelona approaching us for Firmino or anyone else any time soon.
Liverpool are continually looking at the possibility of losing one of their front 3 due to the exceptional form and ongoing performances of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Firmino. Although Barcelona may be kept at bay for a while longer, Real Madrid have been paying close attention to Sadio Mane and they have maintained their close relationship with Mo Salah’s representatives.
At the present time, there is nothing to be concerned about, although we acknowledge that there has been an increased amount of chatter surrounding Firmino and not just in relation to this Barcelona link. This was addressed on an update on DKB.TV this morning and has also been touched upon on our members’ website.
The trio all appear to be settled at Anfield and they’re clearly enjoying themselves. We’re not naive and we do understand that things can change, but we haven’t heard anything internally or from any of the player’s camps to indicate that any of them are looking to jump ship. Firmino may be the one at the centre of the current speculation but if we were to be concerned about losing any of them, it would actually be Mane. He’s the one we expect to be linked with an exit in the second half of the season. More on that here (members).
Meanwhile, Rangers are reportedly wanting to make Sheyi Ojo’s stay at Ibrox permanent. The 22-year-old has impressed so far during his season-long loan and reports suggest that boss Steven Gerrard would like to retain him long term.
