Reports originating from Italy claim that Naby Keïta spent the night in the cardiology unit at the Cardarelli Hospital of Naples.
The Liverpool midfielder was taken off during the first 20 minutes of last night’s 1-0 defeat by Napoli with a suspected back injury. After the game boss Jürgen Klopp stated the 23-year-old had injured his back but he wasn’t sure how serious it was.
Shortly afterwards it was announced that Keïta had been taken to hospital as a precaution and rumours started to circulate suggesting that Liverpool medics feared the player may have suffered a heart-attack.
Overnight, Liverpool Football Club issued the following statement: “Liverpool Football Club can confirm Naby Keita was taken to hospital in Naples on Wednesday evening during the first half of the Champions League fixture with SSC Napoli.
“The midfielder started the game at the Stadio San Paolo, but was substituted inside the opening 20 minutes and replaced by Jordan Henderson after alerting the team’s medical staff to back pain.
“Keita was transferred to a local hospital with the club doctor, where – with the midfielder’s agreement – he underwent a number of precautionary health checks to assess his condition.
“No decision has yet been taken on when the 23-year-old will be discharged.
“Liverpool are scheduled to remain in Italy until Thursday morning before flying back to England.”
KOPTALK sources report that Keïta has been given the all clear and will be returning home with the rest of the squad this morning. As yet there is no official confirmation but as the source is from within the squad, we expect this will be the case.
