It has emerged that Nabil Fekir had even selected his Liverpool squad number prior to his proposed transfer to Anfield coming unstuck at the very last minute.
The 24-year-old, who scored 23 goals for Lyon in Ligue 1 last season, has seen his ‘dream move’ to Anfield collapse but remains hopeful of a deal proceeding, if you choose to believe the reports originating from France.
Fekir wears No. 18 which is currently assigned to Liverpool defender Alberto Moreno. French newspaper L’Equipe claim that Fekir was allocated a squad number although they haven’t published what it was. As Moreno is still officially a Liverpool player despite being linked with an exit, No.8 or No.10 may have been the numbers he chose from.
Sources close to Liverpool claim the Reds pulled out of transfer while sources close to Lyon claimed it was their club president that pulled out of the deal. The suggestion is that Liverpool weren’t happy with the medical reports and that they wanted to renegotiate certain aspects of the deal, although the British mainstream media have claimed Liverpool have made no attempt to renegotiate.
France Football Federation president Noel le Graet, who met Fekir a few days ago when the deal was imminent, has rubbished suggestions that the player could have failed a medical and he believes the drama is all related to brinkmanship.
Le Graet said: “It would be better for him if his transfer was recorded before the departure for Russia, but he did not seem disturbed to me.
“I felt optimistic about it because the medical visit he had was positive.
“In a transfer, it’s always like that. Each one tries to impose its price, to lower it, or to increase it.”
Lyon posted a statement on their official website confirming the deal had collapsed but have since removed it. An alternative statement along similar lines still exists.
Fekir had taken part in all the usual fancy guff for the official Liverpool FC website who were literally minutes away from confirming his arrival. Sources close to the club’s media team say they are yet to dispose of that content.
Liverpool have publicly claimed to have ended their interest in several players during negotiations in the past but have then gone on to sign them in the end so some fans won’t have ruled out Fekir switching to Anfield just yet.
Although it all looks very gloomy, KopTalk sources claim that Liverpool would be willing to proceed with a deal if medical insurance premiums can be brokered with Lyon. But with club president Jean-Michel Aulas proving difficult, there is a possibility that only the player himself can rescue a move, possibly by making some hefty financial sacrifices. Who knows whether he’d be that determined to secure a move to Liverpool, after all this is a player that 3-years ago said that Manchester United were “a club that makes you dream” and suggested a move there would be of interest to him.
In fairness to Fekir though, he has been desperate to join Liverpool so far. Klopp is aware of this and we all know he likes to see that kind of commitment from his potential signings. But for something to happen, Fekir and his representatives are surely going to have to apply a lot of pressure on Aulas.
At the present time we don’t believe the deal is completely dead but because of the uncertainty, we are informed that Liverpool are now looking at alternative options.
We think Liverpool would still complete but it’s going to take some movement from the others involved in earlier negotiations to make it happen.
