Former Coventry City manager Steven Pressley has confirmed that Liverpool and Arsenal tried to sign James Maddison back in 2014.
The 19-year-old midfielder was attracting a lot of interest at the time but an ankle injury scuppered a deal.
During the January 2016 transfer window Liverpool again tried to sign him but the Reds were unable to get it over the line.
Coventry sold him to Norwich during the same window and he now finds himself on loan at Aberdeen for the first half of this season as part of his education.
According to Pressley, the youngster could have ended up with one of the so called ‘big’ clubs had it not been for that injury.
“There was a lot of interest in him long before he went to Norwich this year,” said Pressley.
“He picked up an unfortunate ankle injury just when a number of clubs were ready to pounce last year.
“Big clubs like Arsenal and Liverpool were in advanced stages of recruitment with him.
“It was quite a bad injury that he got before that January window and he missed out on his move.”
