Liverpool have been linked with a possible late move for Crystal Palace ace Wilfried Zaha.
The 26-year old forward is yet to secure a summer transfer away from Selhurt Park after Arsenal ended their interest. The Gunners had a £40million bid rejected before securing the signature of Nicolas Pépé. That has left Everton as possible suitors while Tottenham and Manchester United continue to be linked, albeit weakly.
It is now claimed that Liverpool have made a late enquiry direct to Palace but that they were put off by a condition that any agreed transfer fee would have to be paid upfront.
Liverpool’s sporting director Michael Edwards is rumoured to have been in South London at the weekend ahead of the Community Shield clash against Manchester City. However, Edwards, who is said to have visited The Langham during his jolly, could merely have been completing the Adrian transfer which was announced yesterday.
Despite a very quiet and disappointing transfer window for the Reds, we have always believed that we may table a cheeky bid or two at the 11th hour. Usually, at this stage of the window we expect to see nothing, but as things currently stand, we wouldn’t be surprised if we managed to bring a player in before the window slams shut. Equally we wouldn’t be surprised if absolutely nothing happened which is what most Liverpool supporters will expect the outcome to be.
Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp described Zaha as “a world-class player” back in January and although he would love to have him added to his squad, the suggestions from Anfield this summer have been that the money isn’t there for Klopp to bring in the likes of Zaha or former Kop favourite Philippe Coutinho who has also been looked at.
The Reds have been linked with Zaha on-and-off for some time. In December 2016 we were tipped to bid for him but despite his £25million valuation at the time, no bid was ever tabled during the January 2017 window.
Despite the Zaha rumours that are circulating today, we should point out that no credible sources as yet have confirmed any interest from Anfield in the player.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have also been linked with Besiktas midfielder Dorukhan Toköz (23).
