Newspaper reports this morning claim that Liverpool are lining up a £40million transfer swoop for Southampton duo Virgil van Dijk and Sam McQueen.
We reported 3 weeks ago that 25-year-old centre-back Virgil van Dijk (above) could be a target for Reds’ boss Jürgen Klopp but we haven’t seen 21-year-old left-back McQueen (below) mooted with us until now.
Capped 12 times by the Netherlands, Van Dijk could be on the agenda during the January transfer window but with him having only just signed a 6-year contract in May, he wouldn’t come cheap. Klopp is hoping to move out bad-boy Mamadou Sakho so a replacement will be needed at some point.
Reds’ defender Alberto Moreno could also follow Sakho out of the door meaning the boss also needs to address the left-back berth.
McQueen, who can also play as a left-sided winger, came through the ranks at St Mary’s and only made his Premier League debut in mid-October. He has failed to agree a new contract and could be on his way in the summer when his contract expires.
Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne and Sadio Mane have all been recruited from Southampton by the Reds in recent years.
We have a little bit more on these claims on an extended version of this article on our members’ website which you may find of interest.
