Liverpool FC issue Virgil van Dijk statement

Anfield

Liverpool Football Club have issued the following statement in relation to Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk:

Liverpool Football Club would like to put on record our regret over recent media speculation regarding Southampton Football Club and player transfers between the two clubs. We apologise to the owner, board of directors and fans of Southampton for any misunderstanding regarding Virgil van Dijk. We respect Southampton’s position and can confirm we have ended any interest in the player.

The highly-rated centre-back had rejected offers from Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City in the hope of securing a transfer to Anfield but his current club are allegedly trying to block a transfer to Liverpool by demanding an inflated transfer fee.

Southampton are believed to have reported Liverpool to the Premier League for making an illegal approach for the player.
