Newspaper reports claim that Liverpool and Arsenal are to battle it out for Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland and Schalke 04 midfielder Max Meyer (above).
Reds’ boss Jürgen Klopp has made Butland his number one target to replace Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius if you choose to believe the reports, while Gunners boss Arsene Wenger apparently wants the £40million-rated ‘keeper to replace 35-year-old Petr Čech.
Butland (24) has been mooted as a ‘possible’ target for the Reds for a number of months but we understand that Roma’s Alisson Becker (25) is who Klopp is concentrating on at the moment. Atlético Madrid’s Jan Oblak (25) is another ‘keeper who we know he’s been looking at but it’s Alisson who is receiving the most attention from Anfield just now.
Loris Karius was recently confirmed as the club’s No.1 and it would appear that he has until the summer to convince Klopp that he can be relied upon and some fans are already whispering very quietly that he’s starting to look a little more solid since the manager publicly backed him.
Simon Mignolet is already looking for another club. There was interest in him from overseas during the January transfer window but he won’t walk away from his Anfield wages in a rush. Sources close to the player insist that he won’t be forced into taking a big pay cut to make an exit happen so any interested suitor may have to put forward a decent financial package to try and make a deal happen.
Moving away from goalkeepers and additional reports suggest that Arsenal are stepping up their interest in long-term Liverpool target Max Meyer. The 22-year-old is out of contract in the summer and a host of clubs are interested in the Germany international.
Klopp is a big fan of the attacking midfielder. He made enquiries about his availability in July 2016 and March 2017 and we’re confident that he will table an offer for him, if he doesn’t sign a new deal with Schalke, if he thinks there’s a possibility that the player would be up for a transfer to Anfield.
Arsenal’s interest appears genuine but with the likes of Bayern Munich and Real Madrid also chasing him, he could end up anywhere. Definitely one to monitor.
