As expected, Leon Goretzka has turned down an opportunity to sign for Liverpool and has instead opted to join Bayern Munich.
The 22-year-old Schalke midfielder will join the German giants on a free transfer in the summer.
Schalke’s sporting director Christian Heidel confirmed that the player will become a Bayern player once the current campaign concludes.
He said: “Leon Goretzka informed us earlier this week that he wishes to leave the club and join Bayern. We were very sorry to hear this.
“Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told us yesterday that Leon has completed a medical. We are losing a very very good player.
“He has signed a contract with Bayern from the 1st July 2018.
“We did everything we could to try and keep him. In summer he and his agent reached an agreement, but he wanted time to develop.
“We can cope with this situation, it wasn’t a complete surprise. We are prepared for this.”
Liverpool had offered the player a contract but to be honest, in our opinion, it always looked like he wanted that move to Bayern. He did take his time in announcing his decision though which gave us a little hope that maybe he was giving a switch to Anfield some serious thought.
Klopp must now decide whether or not to meet Monaco’s demands for Thomas Lemar or pay Leipzig an additional £17.7million for Naby Keïta to bring him in earlier. He may of course wait until the summer before doing further transfer business.
The boss is also in the market for a goalkeeper with Simon Mignolet set to leave Anfield as soon as he can find a new club. Daniel Sturridge could also leave the club before the January window closes.
