Leipzig Sporting Director, Markus Krosche, has been speaking about Timo Werner signing a new contract with the German outfit.
The Germany international – who has been heavily linked with Liverpool for a long, long time – recently inked a new deal but it has been suggested that the 23-year-old striker only did that because it contained a low release clause which we believe is around £27million.
Werner was in the last year of his contract so Leipzig stood to lose him for nothing. Now, if he leaves next year, the Germans should bank that release clause figure depending of course on what would actually trigger it. There could be conditions attached that are not known to the general public and media. However, rest assured, Jürgen Klopp will know the ins and outs of that.
Commenting on Werner, Krosche said: “I was aware of the consequences of his decision.
“So, it was important for me to especially send him a signal: Boy make up your mind and when you are ready, we will be there.
“That has paid off.”
Werner is a player that we have always expected to make the switch to Anfield. We know Klopp is an admirer and because Werner has always been within reach financially, we’re surprised that we’ve previously not brought him in. If he is available for £27million, we just can’t see us ignoring that. You could argue that he’s not needed and that he wouldn’t be happy sat on the bench. We’re not so sure, especially with suggestions that Liverpool executives are preparing for the possibility of losing one of the front 3 next year. Don’t start flapping just yet, the club just need to make sure they have a Plan B should something come in next summer that simply cannot be ignored.
