Liverpool legend John Barnes says he hopes to see Mario Götze recruited by Jürgen Klopp this summer.
The former Reds’ winger (52) has been talking about what he thinks Liverpool need to do ahead of the 2016-17 campaign and he believes Götze is the calibre of player that is desperately needed at Anfield.
Digger said: “If the opportunity to get Mario Götze comes, we have to take it because we have to take quality where we can get it.
“We must improve defensively, so a centre-back, full-back and maybe another goalkeeper [are needed].
“If the quality is available to us in terms of a player like Götze, we can’t say no.”
He added: “We have a lot of work to do in terms of getting players in. I always said I would never judge Klopp on this season. It’s obvious we need better players and, if we get three or four in, I’ll be looking forward to next season.”
Götze recently severed ties with the SportsTotal agency who had been in talks with Liverpool about a possible summer transfer. The 23-year-old has also now suggested he will stay at Bayern Munich with former Bayern Munich ace Lothar Matthaus commenting: “Why would he join a club (Liverpool) that do not even play in the Champions League?”
