Feyenoord have completed the signing of Liverpool defender George Johnston.
The 21-year-old who can play on the left side of defence or as a centre-back, had been with the Reds since he was 9-years-old. He makes the switch on a permanent basis after accepting he didn’t figure in Jürgen Klopp’s long term plans.
A Scotland youth and Under-21 international, Johnston’s switch to The Eredivisie comes as a surprise although many will accept that the arrival of 17-year-old defender Sepp van den Berg will have contributed to the decision to move him out.
Johnston made 36 appearances for Neil Critchley’s Under-23s side in Premier League 2 last season and found the net 4 times. He was involved in with the first team during pre-season but that wasn’t enough for him to be retained.
It is believed that former Liverpool favourite and Feyenoord legend Dirk Kuyt had recommended Johnston to Feyenoord boss Jaap Stam.
Liverpool will receive a fee of around £276,000 for Johnston who had less than a year remaining on his contract.
West Brom, Hull City, Blackburn Rovers and Wigan Athletic had all been linked in recent weeks.
