Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp considered making Franck Ribery an offer to make the switch to Anfield, claim reports originating from France today.
The 36-year-old’s contract with Bayern Munich has expired meaning he is available on a free transfer and if you believe the reports, Klopp was looking at the possibility of bringing the winger in during the current transfer window.
It is suggested that Klopp was looking at signing Ribbery because of his experience. However, no offer has been forthcoming and the manager remains fairly inactive this summer with regards his transfer business.
So far, the Reds have only made two signings in Sepp van den Berg (17) and Harvey Elliot (16) which has left supporters feeling extremely frustrated as the Champions League winners have, as yet, failed to add any real quality to the squad for the forthcoming campaign.
The Liverpool manager has gone on record in multiple interviews over the last week or so to state that despite being a lucrative club, he simply doesn’t have the funds available to compete with Europe’s top spenders.
Speaking over the weekend, Klopp said: “We have to pay bills. Sorry. Everybody has to pay bills; we have to pay bills.
“We invested money in this team. Now it looks like we are not.
“But we are not in this fantasia land where you just get whatever you want. You cannot do it constantly.”
Klopp has also continually talked up the club’s young players that are pushing for first team action along with previously injured players returning to his squad by describing them as new signings. He has also commented that funds have gone towards new long term contracts for his players.
Those words prompted Anfield legend Steve Nicol to poke fun at the current spin that’s coming out of the club.
The Scot said: “I love the way managers and coaches can spin people signing a new contract into telling us it’s a transfer: ‘These are our transfers’.
“I didn’t realise Liverpool this season had signed nine new players.
“If you sign nine new players at one time that could destroy the whole chemistry of the team.
“Oh wait a minute, they’re already there!”
