Contract talks with Wijnaldum seemed to have stalled. He only has 10 months to go on his existing deal and the club seem reluctant to give him the new long term contract he wants.

Last season he started 35 league games and the season before 32. He very much an unsung hero in Klopp's first XI.

I'm sure all the talk about Thiago has something to do with this situation. Will be interesting to see if the club will take the gamble of signing an untested(In the premier league) superstar over extending the contract of a first team stalwart.

Interesting situation!

It is concerning regarding Wijnaldum because he has been an ever present in the 1st team under Klopp and got some vital goals for us.

Does seem strange that the club would allow his contract to wind down to under a year left. His Agent is Football Mix B.V. who are not that well known with Gini being far and away their biggest Client. I can't see there being any over the top requests from Gini or his Agent to a new contract, so it must be Liverpool's top brass procrastinating.

My guess is they get it figured out before the end of the transfer window and FSG wheel him out as a "New" signing...they've done this plenty of times before...they're very good with slight of hand tricks are FSG..."OOOh, look we've managed to persuade Gini to stay for another 3 or so years"!

At 29 it is quite usual for players to be getting to the end of their contract, usually they want a big long term contract, so say 4-5 years, but the club often just want to give 1-2 year contracts as you don't want players on big money well past their best on long term contracts, like Ozil & Sanchez.

It's probably Wij last chance at a big move, so he will be making sure he makes the right decision, also, Klopp needs to start rebuilding the team over the next few years, we have a few players in MF in early 30#s with Wij, Hendo & Milner, so maybe now is the time to cash in on Wij and bring in a younger MF player. People have pointed out he has played 30+ games for the last 3-4 season, which is great, but our MF is one of the hardest working in World football, so it must take it's toll on players, so judging that is key before giving long term deals.

errrr he's 29 not 34 like Milner or 30 like injury prone Henderson!
If we are worried about age then Milner and Henderson should be ahead of the queue.

I wouldn't be surprised if the extended contract has been agreed awhile ago and it's been purosely dated early October for finalising. A hail mary if FSG don't manage to negotiate somebody to oblivion!

From LFC Website:

Attacking midfielder Tom Hill has signed a new contract with Liverpool.

So in short, the club is still negotiating and renewing contracts of players even whilst their on break during this inconvenient to us, BUT convenient for them ChiComm virus. There's a specific reason why they've not done anything about Wijnaldum's contract extension yet and we've been here many, many times before under FSG!

He's massive for us. Way more important than people realise.

One of the very few box to box players out there. He's played nearly every position for us too. His contract is a must.

It's a strange situation because Wijnaldum is arguably our best midfielder so I dont understand the hold up, he is doing a thankless task running endlessly in Klopp's system while he plays more attacking for his national team which is his preffered position. We need to sign him up asap or risk losing him for nothing without replacing him.

The outcome of this will be very interesting. As far as I can see FSG have the following options:

1-Reward him with the long term contract he desires knowing that they giving up a any chance of a sell on fee.

2-Cash in now. Should get £20m. Replace with Thiago.

3-Let him rundown his contract so he can leave on a free next summer like Emre Can did a few years ago.

From the players point of view this is probably his last chance for a big/lucrative move. If he don't get the deal he wants with LFC he will most likely be off.

Will be very interesting to see how this plays out.
