'Ridiculous if true' - Liverpool fans come to Virgil van Dijk's defence after Ballon d'Or 'leak'

Barcelona's Lionel Messi is now the favourite to claim the Ballon d'Or ahead of the Liverpool defender.

Liverpool fans have been quick to come the defence of Virgil van Dijk after Lionel Messi overtook him as the bookmakers’ favourite to win the Ballon d’Or.

Reports in Spain have claimed that Messi has already been told he will win the prestigious award, with Mundo Deportivo carrying a leaked claim that the Argentina star was informed of his success after being interviewed by a team from France Football.

Van Dijk had been leading the way with the bookies to beat both Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo – who have won 10 of the last 11 between them – to the top individual award.

The Dutchman has enjoyed a stellar year with the Reds , having helped them to Champions League glory during the summer, including a remarkable semi-final victory over Messi’s Barcelona.

The 28-year-old was crowned UEFA Player of the Year off the back of his performances in August, beating his Argentinian rival to the honour.

But it seems Messi could now scoop the Ballon d’Or away from van Dijk – something which Liverpool fans are not best pleased with.

Messi is odds-on at 1/8 with some bookmakers in the betting to win the top prize, while Van Dijk is now second favourite at around 9/2, with Ronaldo further back at around 16/1.

France Football, the magazine which originated the award in 1956, announced a 30-man shortlist back in October that included Van Dijk and several other Reds stars.

The winner will be announced at a special ceremony next Monday at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris.

I thought it was a sick joke when Messi won the FIFA Player Of The Year Award in September and now this???

Liverpool should say f...uck FIFA and say we have a more important domestic competition in December to play than their shi.tty arsed World Club Comp and decline their invitation!

Seriously it's been a monopoly of Messi and Ronaldo for every individual award for the past decade, which granted has not been too far off being correct. However Messi and Ronaldo have only been important in their domestic comps which are invariably limited in competition. Van Dijk has been a consistent colossus for well over a year and was a Champions League Winner this past year which should have seen him be a shoe in for all the individual player awards!

I know the Ballon D'Or is not voted by FIFA...BUT they've influenced this with their ridiculous award to Messi In September!

F.cuk FIFA Liverpool, we have always gotten the sh.itty end of the stick with FIFA and by watching the Copa Libertadores last weekend, we'll end up getting roughed up by volatile South Americans and on the end of some dodgy Ref decisions like we did in the past when taking part in this competition. Besides it's a trip to inhospitable Qatar right smack in the middle of a vital PL season for us.

"IF" it's a must compete and we can't get out of it, then send the kids and Peppy Lijnders and let the 1st team concentrate on Villa in the League Cup Quarter Final. F.cuk Fifa's showpiece until they can show us some respect!

Defenders rarely win the top awards, as they are not eye catching compared to Ronaldo/Messie etc. I get the feeling VvD really doesn't care about these awards, he's does not appear ego driven unlike Ronaldo etc, it's about the team for him, we should just fully ignore it and that will p*ss Fifa off more.

As for the Club World Cup, FIFA are really pushing this, we do not give it much credence in the UK/PL, but around the world it is recognized and will increase in importance, so we would be stupid not to take it seriously, as this brings in coverage/fans/sponsorship for the club, which keeps us competitive and able to attract the top world players, especially when you look at the latest round of investment for City, they would love to have their 'brand' all over this, instead they have to pay youtube/twitter influencer's to peddle their name to attract interest.

It is no surprise but less than a week ago VVD was 2/5. Messi was 9/4. For odds to tumble like this there must be a leak followed up with significant money being placed on the outcome by professional gamblers "in the know" at that price of 9/4.

When Modric won it he was only a token "other" person.
He had nothing like the form of VVD this year.

Just hope we win CL again and all our players blank this next season.

Doubt if there is a duty to attend these things.

Well looks like somebody in the FIFA Cartel family was spotted in Willy Hill's for the odds to come tumbling down like that!
